Credit Card Sign-Up Bonuses: Are They Worth It?
What credit card welcome bonuses are really worth in dollars, the spending they require, how often they change, and when chasing one costs you money.
What a sign-up bonus really is
A sign-up bonus (or welcome offer) is a lump of cash back, points or miles you earn after spending a set amount in your first few months, for example "$200 after you spend $500 in 3 months". It's the issuer paying to acquire you, and it's often worth more than a year of ordinary rewards.
CardFit converts each bonus to cash at the same conservative point values it uses everywhere (see what points are worth), so a 60,000-point bonus and a $200 bonus can be compared directly.

A big bonus often comes with a big fee. The American Express Platinum Card is worth about $1,260 in its first year with the bonus, and −$140 a year after that on typical spending.
The minimum spend trap
The bonus is only free if the required spending would have happened anyway. Plan it before you apply: add up what you'd normally put on a card over the bonus window. If you'd fall short, the options are timing a planned large purchase, or picking a card with a lower requirement.
What's never worth it: buying things you don't need, or carrying a balance to hit the target. At typical card interest rates of 20% or more, a few months of interest on a large balance can wipe out the bonus.
Judge the card, not the bonus
Every card page on CardFit shows two numbers: the first year with the bonus, and every year after. The second is the one that matters for a card you'll keep. A $95 card with a $750 bonus that earns $40 less than a free card every year is a good first year and a bad decade.
If you plan to keep the card, rank by ongoing value on the best cash back or best travel lists, and treat the bonus as a tiebreaker. If the fee is the question, read annual fee vs no annual fee.
Bonuses change, so check the history
Issuers raise and cut welcome offers throughout the year. We read every issuer's page daily and log each change on recent credit card changes, with a full timeline for cards whose offer has moved, such as American Express Graphite Business Cash Unlimited Card, Chase Air Canada Aeroplan Card, Bank of America Atmos Rewards Ascent Visa Signature Alaska Airlines Credit Card and Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card.
If a card's current offer is below its usual level, waiting a few weeks can be worth more than applying today.
Questions people ask
Are credit card sign-up bonuses worth it?
Yes, if you'd hit the minimum spend with purchases you were already making. The median welcome bonus on cards we track is worth about $315. Spending extra or carrying a balance to qualify usually costs more than the bonus.
Does applying for a card to get a bonus hurt my credit?
Each application adds a hard inquiry, which usually lowers a score by a few points for a few months. Several applications close together have a bigger effect, so space them out.
Are credit card bonuses taxed?
Generally not when earned by spending: the IRS treats them as a rebate on purchases. Bonuses paid without any spending (such as for opening an account) can be taxable. Check with a tax professional for your situation.
Can I get the same card bonus twice?
Usually not quickly. Most issuers limit bonuses to new cardmembers or to once every few years per card or card family. The terms next to the offer state the rule.
